Administrative / Biographical History

The British Naval Northwest Passage Expedition, 1818 (leader John Ross) set out from London in April of 1818 . Parry captained HMS Alexander while the expedition leader John Ross sailed on HMS Isabella. The expedition was to search Baffin Bay for an entrance to a Northwest Passage via Smith Sound, Jones Sound and Lancaster Sound. The expedition confirmed the discoveries that had been made by Robert Bylot and William Baffin during their British Northwest Passage Expedition, 1616. The expedition also encouraged whalers to extend their activities north to Baffin Bay and the coast of Baffin Island.
