Track 1. [00:01:10] Community: Went to Tycoch School. Learnt to read at home liked books. [00:02:10] Community: Read the newspaper the Swansea Leader. [00:02:30] Community: When the teacher was absent I had to read to the other children. [00:03:05] Community: Hopscotch, skipping and hoops. [00:03:40] Community: Left school at 14yrs. [00:04:30] Community: Teaching system in school, no school dinners. [00:05:25] Community: Porridge, Bread Pudding, Pea soup. [00:05:30] Community: Mother died young so me and my sister used to do the housework. Father worked underground. Father remarried when I was 11. [00:06:50] Community: Tub on floor for a bath. [00:07:07] Community: Went to Welsh chapel but could not understand anything. [00:07:38] Community: Band of Hope and Magic lantern shows. [00:07:50] Community: Would go to Sketty Village for shopping. [00:08:40] Community: Going to Swansea on the tramcar on Saturday afternoon, describes route. [00:09:27] Community: Summers on the beach on Brynmill sands. [00:10:37] Community: Grandmother worked for eminent houses. [00:11:10] Community: My step mother was in service and she got me a job washing dishes after school. [00:12:00] Community: Went into service in the same house when I left school for 7 years until I got married. [00:13:03] Community: My friend did not have to work - she just stayed home. [00:13:13] Community: I used to give my mother money out of my wages. [00:14:20] Community: Very nice food there - Salmon etc.They would entertain. [00:15:28] Community: No rationing in First World War. [00:16:10] Community: Remembers when uncle had to go to fight. [00:16:29] Community: Got married at 19. [00:17:03] Community: Husband worked in Mannesman and then on the buses whe it closed. [00:17:21] Community: Hated holidays because men did not get paid. [00:18:35] Community: Boys had more opportunities than girls. [00:19:15] Community: Sister was first in Wales to win gold medal for electric typewriter.
