University of Liverpool, Special Collections and Archives
The University of Liverpool, founded initially as University College in 1881, received its charter in 1903. The materials held in Special Collections and Archives reflect the development of the institution and the generosity of collectors for more than a century.
Collections
University Archives: administrative papers from 1870s onwards complemented by papers of former staff and students of University of Liverpool including, among others, Sir Cyril Burt; Lord Holford; Sir Charles Reilly; Sir Oliver Lodge and Professor E. Allison Peers.
Manuscripts: Oxyrhynchus papyri; Medieval, Renaissance, and Oriental manuscripts. Deeds of the Norris family of Speke Hall, c. 1220-1637, and of the Aston family of Cheshire, 16th-19th centuries; autograph letters, and modern papers including papers of Ted Hughes, Seamus Heaney, Adrian Henri, Roger McGough and Brian Patten.

Significant Non-Manuscript Material: Printed book collections in all fields 15th-20th centuries; Science Fiction Foundation Collection c25,000 vols.; Collections of early children's books c. 10,000 vols.; Scott Macfie Gypsy Collection includes c5,000 vols. and 3,500 photographs; audio-visual material mainly in the University Archives, Science Fiction Collections, and Gypsy Collections.
