The Scientific Correspondence of Thomas Mellard Reade

Scope and Content

The Thomas Mellard Reade papers held in the University of Liverpool Special Collections and Archives Department, contain 1958 letters comprising his scientific correspondence, 28 letters comprising copies of his own letters to correspondents, 42 letters returned from Philip Holland and 1 printed book. All mainly concern aspects of geology and related sciences.

Administrative / Biographical History

1832 -- 1909 : geologist ; architect , and  civil engineer  at Liverpool from 1860 ; laid out Blundellsands estate, 1868 ; wrote much on glacial and post-glacial geology of Lancashire, on mineral structure of slaty rocks, and on geomorphology; published Origin of Mountain Ranges (1886 ), and Evolution of EarthStructure (1903 ); F.G.S. 1872 ; Murchison medallist 1896 .

The order of arrangement as carried out by his son, Allan Lyell Reade has been preserved in its entirety. The collection is arranged as follows:

  • Printed Works, TMR4

The arrangement has been described more fully at the appropriate levels.

Acquisition Information

The archive was donated to the University of Liverpool by Thomas Mellard Reade's son, Aleyn Lyell Reade, in 1936 .
