Scope and Content

These papers are an addition to the Papers of David Owen held at the University of Liverpool, Special collections and Archives. Primarily they concern material relating to the Social Democratic Party and a broad range of foreign affairs issues, including the Balkans and the "No to the Euro" campaign. Comprises correspondence, newspaper articles, SDP publications and, articles and speeches.

Administrative / Biographical History

Born on 2nd July 1938 David Anthony Llewellyn Owen was a key figure in British Politics during the 1960s through to his resignation from The House of Commons in 1992. After being a member of the Labour party he left and formed the Social Democratic Party along with three other Labour politicians. After retirement he continued to play an important international role, particularly in the former Yugoslavia and in the build up to the EU Constitution he became chairman of New Europe. He was the co-leader of the 'No to the Euro' campaign.
