Scope and Content

Records relating to the participation of the RCOG in the Conference of Royal Medical Colleges in the UK, including agenda, circulated papers and minutes of meetings, correspondence relating to the establishment of the conference, papers of the RCOG President as chairman of the Conference (1983 - 1990), and discussion of specialist training.

Administrative / Biographical History

In July 1975 it was agreed that a Conference of Royal Colleges and their Faculties of Medicine in the UK should be formed. Sir Rodney Smith was proposed as the first chairman. Membership was to include one representative from each constituent member. It was envisaged that, in addition to the UK Conference, the Scottish Colleges and perhaps those in England and Wales would need to meet separately from time to time. In October 1976 the name was changed to the Conference of Medical Royal Colleges, and it had sixteen members who met quarterly to ‘discuss the work of the Joint Consultants Committee and the DHSS.’ It had no full-time officers, no permanent home and a negligible budget.’ By 1996 it had two full-time members of staff, a permanent home at 1 Wimpole Street and had renamed itself The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. The Academy moved to its own premises in Dallington Street, London in January 2011. A new governance structure establishing a separate board of trustees and an Academy Council comprising all member organisations was established in April 2011.

Custodial History

The provenance of these records is not clear, but it is likely that most were removed from the general correspondence file series of the College Presidents to form a subject-based series of Conference material. An exception is the material at C2/3 which appears to be the official papers of the College President as chairman, 1983-1990
