Scope and Content

Records of the Joint Working Party of the RCOG and Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health on Children's and Maternity Services in 2009, including project papers and agreements, meeting papers of the Steering Group on Working Time Solutions 2009, reports, Maternity Panel meeting papers, and case studies.

Administrative / Biographical History

This working party was commissioned by National Workforce Projects (NWP) and established jointly by the two Colleges to assess the problems clinicians faced in implementing the Working Time Directive (WTD) (93/104/EC) which limited the availability of doctors in training to a maximum weekly working time of 48 hours from 1 August 2009. The objectives of the project were to:

obtain information from maternity services and paediatric units in England on their progress towards meeting the WTD 2009 requirements - assess the impact of these models upon training and professional development of paediatricians, obstetricians and gynaecologists

evaluate the effectiveness of possible models of staffing in a range of services that are compliant with the 2009 WTD

devise an integrated communication strategy with NWP, whereby appropriate advice could be disseminated throughout the NHS in England.
