Scope and Content

The manuscript is described on the opening page as "A discourse by way of dialogue betwixt a writer and his apprentice Opening up The nature and constitution of heretable and moveable rights ... taken from a manuscript in the library of Mr John McGowan writer to the signet." An introduction is followed by the main text, numbered pp1-212 followed by a list of the contents, with page references.
A different hand has written brief biographical details of John McGowan on the front flyleaf. At the top of the same page is the signature of Robert Rattray. It is not clear if he, or an unknown scribe, wrote out the text.
