Administrative / Biographical History

Elinor [Johnstone] Dempster was born on 22 May 1910, daughter of William Dempster and Ellen Mary Owen. She was educated at Wycombe Abbey School (1924-1928) where she learnt to play lacrosse. She was an active lacrosse player throughout the 1930s, playing at club, county and terrritorial level, representing Hoylake Ladies' Lacrosse Club, Mersey Ladies' Lacrosse Club, Cheshire (captaining the team in 1938/39) and the North. She was selected to play for the England Reserves in October 1932 and remained a member of the England Reserves team until 1937.

Elinor continued playing lacrosse until 1966; long after her playing career was over she retained an active interest in the game and was elected an Honorary Life Member of the All England Women's Lacrosse Association in 1971.

Elinor died on 22 August 1997.

The papers were included in a donation to the University of Bedfordshire by Carol Haydn-Evans on 23 May 2017 under Accession No. AWL2017/002.
