Scope and Content

Manuscript transcript [made by or for Mason] of notes on the Bombay Marine and Indian Navy collected by Commander J.H. Wilson, October 1872. The notes detail military and other services of the Bombay Marine and the 'Local Service', notes from Bombay newspapers, and notes on the history of the service. There is also a transcript of a brief summary of Wilson's career in the Indian Navy, written in 1850. This describes his appointment as a volunteer in 1812, a number of voyages on which he held various positions, rising in seniority to commander, and his appointment in 1836 as controller of Bombay Dock Yards until his retirement from the service in 1838.
