Scope and Content

Manuscript fair copy of a memorandum by John Charles Mason concerning the Bengal Marine and Indian Navy, 16 December 1852, annotated, probably by Mason. The bulk of this document constitutes a detailed history of the Bengal Marine. With two letters from J.C. Mason to 'Charlie' concerning the ranks of officers and the names of steamers, 1873 and 1877.

A note by Mason of May 1861 states that a memorandum dated 1854 concerning the incorporation of the Bengal Marine with the Indian Navy was given to M. Baring 'when the question of about the Indian Navy was first mooted', who then gave it with other papers to Sir Charles Wood.
