Scope and Content

A Methodist Society first met here in 1811 in Market Street when Charlbury was part of the Oxfordshire circuit. They had a licensed room at the house of W. Grace, ropespinner. In 1813 a barn in Fisher's Lane was licensed and in 1823 a chapel was built in Fisher's Lane on land given by Edward Bolton's widow, Hannah. This chapel was still in use in 1969. The Sunday school commenced in 1822 in the barn in which the services were held previous to the building of the chapel
