Scope and Content

Notebook containing extracts and notes from miscellaneous sources, relating to the persecution of Catholics in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, including: returns on forfeited estates in the counties of Monmouth and Hereford; items relating to the "Popish Plot", 1678-91, and the consequent appearance of supposed papists at Monmouth Sessions; letters, 1678-82, to and from the Marquis of Worcester, mainly concerned with information supplied against Catholics; diary of Walter Powell, 1605-55; material relating to Jesuits at the Cwm, 1635-1773, brief biographies of Catholic clergy; numerous accounts of searches, arrests and subsequent court proceedings against suspected Catholic recusants for various alleged treasonable, criminal or civil misdemeanours; and several petitions. The volume ends with an entry on the Boylan family, dated 3 January 1923.
