Notebook entitled 'Some Records of the Monmouth Mission from Vol. IX (Miscellanea VII) of the Catholic Record Society's Publications and contributed by John Hobson Matthews, 1911', described as having been transcribed verbatim by J. H. Canning, May 1921. The introduction by J. H. Matthews consists of a brief history of the Monmouth Mission and includes a section on the Catholic Mission at Perth-hir (Perthir), Rockfield, ending with a list of priests in charge of the Monmouth Mission, 1791-1898. The text is divided into several sections, as follows: p. 9 Comments on entries relating to 'Recusants presented at the Monmouth Quarter Sessions, 1716-19,' with a sub-section listing names of 'Catholics presented at the Monmouth Quarter Sessions for non-attendance at Protestant Worship in the Parish Church'; p. 14 List of 'Catholics subscribing to the Oath of Allegiance in Monmouthshire, 1778-1805', preceded by a brief account of the Quarter Sessions held at the Guildhall, Monmouth, in 1778; p. 28 'Anniversaries to be observed in the Catholic Chapel of Monmouth.' Entries date from 1798 to 1883 and in many cases the age of the deceased is supplied; p. 33 Transcripts of 'Entries relating to Catholics in the Registers of the Parish of St Mary in the Town of Monmouth'. A baptism of 1598 is mentioned, with full entries dated between 1601 and 1831. They are followed by extracts from the parish registers of Rockfield, 1696-1812, and extracts from the parish registers of St Maughan's, 1739-93. Many of the entries are accompanied by footnotes relating to the genealogies of Catholic families; p. 52 Notes and an apparent transcription of a document concerning the 'Appointment of a Committee for the erection of the Catholic Chapel at Monmouth' 1792, giving the names of the committee members and witnesses; p. 54 An account of 'The earlier Registers of the Mission of Monmouth, 1791-1830', including older copies of Monmouth and Perth-hir (Perthir) registers discovered at the presbytery by J. H. Matthews in 1906. These comments are followed by transcripts of entries from the registers: baptisms 1791-1830, marriages 1799-1826, and a note on the licensing of the chapel for the solemnization of marriages, 1837; p. 121 A heading concerning 'Additions and Corrections to the Perthir Registers,' with a reference to Vol. I, p. 272, of the CRS publications, and a note by Canning to the effect that he has corrected the appropriate entries and page numbers in his manuscript copy of the registers. (see MS 3, page 133); p. 122 Short history of the Needham family of Hilston. The notes also describe a tombstone in St Maughan's parish church, and remark briefly on the pedigree, family home and arms of the Needhams; p. 128 Transcript of a 'Letter of the late Reverend Mr. Thomas Abbot, Rector of the Catholic Mission of Monmouth, to Alfred Williams, esq., JP, of the Mount, Caerleon, dated from Lancaster, 1 September 1902.' The letter relates to the Prichard family, particularly Bishop [Matthew] Prichard, OSJ, second Vicar Apostolic of the area, who was linked with the Powell family of Perth-hir; p. 137 A fresh section in the notebook begins with 'Entries Relating to the Monmouth Mission in the "Catholic Registers of the City of Worcester."' Initial comments are followed by transcriptions of entries for baptisms, 1685-9, and reconciliations, 1686-8; p. 149 The final section is entitled 'Catholic Registers of Courtfield in the Parish of Welsh Bicknor, Monmouthshire, 1773-1832, from Vol. IV of the Catholic Record Society's Publications Contributed by John Hobson Matthews, 1907. Transcribed verbatim into this book by J. H. Canning, June 1921.' The earliest volume was a "pocket register kept by the Rev. George Knight, SJ, Chaplain to the family of Vaughan of Courtfield," containing miscellaneous entries 1773-90. The first of the regular registers includes the number and names of Catholics who belonged to Courtfield Congregation and Chapel, with locations of their dwellings and occasional notes on individuals; also baptisms 1806-34, first communions 1808-20, confirmations 1808-25, conversions 1807-10, marriage 1808, burials 1808-18. The second volume contains an undated marriage record, births and baptisms 1805-32, deaths 1832, list of priests at Courtfield 1804-96, a further marriage entry 1831, and further deaths 1830 and 1832. Throughout the notebook, Canning has marked pages of the original sources in red ink. For an index, see MS 2.
