Administrative / Biographical History

Joseph Herbert Canning (d. 1940) was an engineer and manager of Newport Gas Company in Monmouthshire. As a Catholic, he became chairman of the Board of Managers of Catholic Non-Provided Schools in Newport; he also served as a member of Lord Moulton's Committee of Gas Engineers in the Ministry of Munitions during World War I, being awarded the OBE for his services. In 1930, he received the Papal honour of the Knight of St. Gregory. He undertook extensive research into the history of Catholicism in Monmouthshire, publishing articles on John Kemble and David Lewis. He also edited The Catholic Registers of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, 1740-1838.
