Scope and Content

This subfonds comprises papers relating to Geoffrey Hill's critical writing and lectures. This generally does not include teaching lectures (these can generally be found in subfonds BC MS 20c Hill/5), although there are some examples of papers written and delivered at Boston University. Includes examples of early critical writing dating to Hill's time at Keble College, Oxford and papers relating to his Inaugural Lecture at the University of Leeds; the publication of 'The Lords of Limit'; the 1984 Bateson Memorial Lecture; the 1986 Clark Lectures and the publication of 'The Enemy's Country'; a paper delivered at the 1996 Poles of Health Conference; papers delivered as part of 'Conversazione' series at Boston University; the 1998 Warton Lecture; critical articles and essays on Thomas Hobbes, A.E. Housman, T.S. Eliot, William Tyndale, John Crowe Ransom, Robert Southwell, W.B. Yeats, and Dante; the 2000 Tanner Lectures; a contribution to a festschrift for Inga-Stina Ewbank; the 2000 Ward-Phillips Lectures; a symposium on Dietrich Bonhoeffer; the T.S. Eliot Centary Lecture at the University of Leeds (1988); the 2001 T.S. Eliot Memorial Lecture; the Preface to 'Style and Faith'; lectures and talks on Shakespeare discussing courage, passion in 'Romeo and Juliet', and 'Coriolanus'; the 2005 Empson Lectures; a lecture and critical article on Sidney Keyes; notebooks and an index; a paper delivered at the Yeats International Summer School in 1970; and an introduction to a lecture by George Steiner.
