Poetry notebooks and early poems and drafts

This subfonds comprises items relating to the creation and development of Geoffrey Hill's poems. It includes 68 notebooks used for recording imagery and drafting poems; and 6 files of poem drafts, fragments and workings, clippings and small publications dating from the late 1940s to the early 1950s.Where the notebooks and drafts relate to poems in Hill's published poetry collections, details and cross references have been supplied.

Access to this part of the collection is restricted under the Data Protection Act. You will need to complete a restricted access form and return it to Special Collections for review by staff before access can be granted.

Digital photography is strictly prohibited. Photocopying is restricted and the photocopying of correspondence is prohibited. Enquiries relating to the photocopying of material should be addressed to the Head of Special Collections at Leeds University Library in the first instance. Direct quotation from manuscripts by Geoffrey Hill is permitted in unpublished PhD theses. The permission of the copyright holder must be sought for the use of quotations from manuscripts by Geoffrey Hill for works intended for publication.
