Scope and Content

A series of notes by William Waugh for a chapter on cement in the biography of Charnley [John Charnley: the man and the hip], made from correspondence and documents provided by staff at CMW Laboratories, and other colleagues and collaborators of Charnley, including Dennis C. Smith, chemist and biomaterials specialist. Also included are draft pages of the chapter on cement in the biography, some pages amended and annotated.

There is correspondence between Waugh and CMW Laboratories, with requests for information, queries on composition, testing and manufacture, and requests for the provision of information sheets and reports.

Also included are a Report to Department of Health and Social Security by the Working Party on Acrylic Cement, 1974, and copies of letters sent by Charnley to former patients, requesting that they bequeath their prostheses to Charnley for study following their decease.
