George Chatterton (1816-1908) b Sheffield, was apprenticed to the company W & S Butcher, Sheffield and whilst there was credited as being the first to manufacture engineering files from steel. Chatterton was an advocate of extending the voting rights to young men, and the airing of these views resulted in him being placed in the stocks on one occasion. He emigrated to Providence, Rhode Island in 1839.
