Papers relating to the commemoration, promotion and study of D.H. Lawrence, in the D.H. Lawrence Collection; 1959-1995

Scope and Content

The group includes series of papers relating to festivals, conferences, publications and other events arranged for the celebration and study of D.H. Lawrence. The largest group of material present comprises correspondence, photographs and other papers regarding exhibitions hosted by the University of Nottingham in 1960, 1980 and 1985. Also present are papers relating to the 1985 Lawrence symposium held at the University, correspondence on the published proceedings of this symposium and a file of correspondence regarding the 1985 Lawrence centenary issue of Renaissance and Modern Studies, edited by Professor James T. Boulton.

Other papers within this group include cuttings and ephemera relating to Lawrence exhibitions, festivals and conferences held elsewhere, including items produced for the 1970 Taos Lawrence festival, and newscuttings about 'Young Bert', an exhibition held at Nottingham Castle in 1971. Photographs and commemorative pamphlets on the unveiling of a Lawrence memorial in poet's corner, Westminster Abbey and a series of flyers and leaflets for local Lawrence events collected by Margaret Needham are also present.

Administrative / Biographical History

Increasing academic and popular interest in D.H. Lawrence led to the organisation of many celebratory events and scholarly conferences from the late 1950s. A number of these were held at Nottingham University, in the local Nottinghamshire area, or associated with University staff. In addition to records of the events themselves, these activities generated files of correspondence about preparations, including contacts with scholars and collectors.

Papers relating to exhibitions, festivals, conferences, scholarly publications, and commemorative events on D.H. Lawrence have been brought together to form this artificial group. Similar material which naturally belongs within a larger archive group has not been moved to join the La S series, but can be found in its appropriate context (see e.g. within La Z 12).

Arrangement

Papers in this group are arranged in four series: miscellaneous papers; papers relating to Lawrence events at the University of Nottingham; papers from conferences, festivals and exhibitions held elsewhere; papers concerning publications on D.H. Lawrence.
