Scope and Content

Illuminated Book of Hours in its original binding. The manuscript was written in the Low Countries for use by Franciscan monks in the district of Liege or Maastricht (the Low Countries refers to a region of North West Europe comprising the Netherlands, Belgium, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg). The scribe has signed their name at the end of the volume, "John", although their exact identity is unknown.

The main parts of this manuscript are: calendar; commendatio animarum; hours of the virgin, preceded by the sequentiae from the gospels and followed by the office for the dead; the penitential psalms with litany; the preparation for the mass; the horae de S. Katherina; various prayers. The manuscript accords to the use of Rome and is representative of the ordinary service books in everyday use at the time.

Language: Latin.
