Addis met James Haldene Stewart Lockhart (1858-1937), in Hong Kong in the 1880s and their friendship continued into old age. In Hong Kong they had the same teacher of Chinese, whose death is mentioned here. Lockhart was especially interested in folklore and several letters are to Addis in Peking questioning him on local customs while the majority include requests for books or other items of interest. Lockhart had a distinguished career in China and refers occasionally to his early public appointments. Some of Addis's replies to these letters are in the letter books.
