John (Jack) Fleming was a friend of Addis in Edinburgh who left for South Africa at the same time as Addis started work for the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) in London having failed to persuade Addis to come with him. Despite high hopes he seems to have found it difficult to establish himself and in 1886, when this series of letters ends, his father paid for him to visit home. His subsequent progress is mentioned in letters to Addis from his family and the letter books have three letters to him from Addis when abroad. He died at the Cape in 1889.
