Scope and Content

A very unusual feature in a windmill, the universal joint in the top section of the Upright Shaft was installed in the latter half of the 19th century to overcome problems caused by settlement of the mill. This allowed the lower part of the shaft to be aligned separately, but also permitted the Wallower to be disengaged from the Brake Wheel.
