Engineering

These records consist of the working papers of the BBC’s engineering divisions and departments, tracing the development of the technical facilities required for the production and transmission of sound and vision. They mainly concern broadcast engineering, but also cover civil engineering for papers relating to the architectural work and maintenance of the BBC’s premises, including radio and television transmitters.

This sub-fonds is arranged into four sub-sub-fonds; Broadcast Engineering, Civil Engineering, Research and Development, and Online. They reflect the major activities of the engineering divisions and are further divided into series loosely based on the original department titles.

Files concerned with the engineering departments of the BBC were previously grouped together with radio records under the title ‘Radio and Central’. They have been subsequently rearranged into this Engineering sub-fonds to better reflect the original provenance of the files.
