Scope and Content

This section contains documents

concerning the Manor of Hampton Poyle

(with associated property there),

Ploughley Hundred, and property at

Hampton Gay. The manor and the hundred

were purchased by the West family, and

then sold to Arthur (III), Earl of

Anglesey in 1717. Almost at once, in

1723, Arthur (III) sold it to the Tilson

family (this sudden change in mind may

be linked to the fact that, as 1D/54

shows, Arthur (III) had had to borrow a

large sum of money to buy the lands,

which he may have been unable to repay).

Meanwhile, 1719, the Tilsons had bought

extensive property at Hampton Gay.

In 1795, Arthur Annesley (X) bought back

the manor and the hundred from the

Tilsons, but also purchased the Hampton

Gay property.

This group also includes conveyances of

1878 and 1910 unconnected with the main

collection of deeds.

Papers concerning these properties after

their purchase by the Annesleys are at

E6/6 below.

A fuller history of the Manor of Hampton

Poyle may be found on pp.161-2 of Vol.

VI of the Victoria County History of

Oxfordshire.
