Administrative / Biographical History

Leo Baeck (1873-1956) was a German rabbi, scholar and international leader of Liberal Judaism. In Berlin he had presided over the largest Jewish community in Germany from 1905 onwards. Deported to Theresienstadt in 1943 he continued his community work as a member of the council of Elders. Upon liberation Baeck moved to London and became president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. The Leo Baeck Institute with branches in New York, London and Jerusalem is named after him.
