Administrative / Biographical History

Before the Second World War the function of City Architect was performed by the Master of Works as City Engineer. In 1951 the first City Architect and Planning Officer was appointed, as head of what was to become the Architectural and Planning Department. In 1960 his post title changed to City Architect and Director of Planning, and in 1966 a separate Director of Planning was appointed. The post of City Architect and his Department (as Architecture and Civic Design) continued thereafter until local government reorganisation in 1975.
