Administrative / Biographical History

Glasgow Airport is near the Clyde at Abbotsinch, Renfrewshire, about nine miles west of the city. The site had initially been a training station for the RAF, and then from 1943 until 1963 a Royal Naval Air Station (as HMS Sanderling). Work started on the new civil airport in 1962. It became operational in May 1966 and was owned and operated by the Corporation, with the Civil Aviation Authority providing air traffic control and navigation services. In April 1975 the British Airports Authority acquired it, using statutory powers contained in the Airports Authority Act 1965 (c.16). It was by then the fifth busiest in the United Kingdom, handling over two million passengers annually.
