Administrative / Biographical History

The former Markets and Slaughterhouses Trust was consolidated with the council in 1895 (Glasgow Corporation and Police Act 1895). By 1914 the Markets Department was operating eight markets and three slaughterhouses. The department continued until 1975, when it transferred to Glasgow District Council. By then it was responsible only for a single abattoir in Bellgrove Street, a manure depot, a motor market (also in Bellgrove Street), the fish market (Bridgegate and East Clyde Street), the meat market in Graham Square and a recently built fruit market in Blochairn Road.
