Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Bonar Hall included a multi-purpose hall & stage with seating up to 600; a Senate Room for 100 persons; upper & lower foyers; cafeteria space; & exhibition spaces & the normal ancillaries.
In the conformity with the multi purpose function of the hall, it was fitted with retractable seating which allows a variable seating layout related to use.
The planning, with its upper & lower access, arises from site levels, the influence of present & future pedestrian & vehicular movement patterns & relates to the original intention that the building was to be the first stage of a Hall/ Repertoire Theatre combination with shared use & facilities.
The construction was of laminated timber & steel roof structures resting on loadbearing brickwork & reinforced concrete floors, with aluminium patent glazing & timber windows. External materials are restricted & are basically facing brick & stained softwood windows. Internally, walls are exposed painted blockwork, softwood doors & woodwork stained and ceilings are of timber & exposed concrete. Floors are carpeted in the public areas with hardwood flooring in the hall & vinyl flooring in ancillaries.
The landscaping relates to existing trees & planting & integrates existing and new access levels by means of paving.
