Wingate developed a great respect for Jewish soldiers in hand to hand combat, because they were well motivated. "He often used to quote Cromwell on the importance for a solider to understand the purpose of the war in which he is engaged."

Wingate's great interest in leadership, and he was very interested in what they thought made a good leader. Wingate's friendship with Haim Sturmann:"he was much impressed by Sturman[n]'s determined opposition to the killing of an Arab, just because he was an Arab." Wingate's talent was to find independent solutions to problems.
