Administrative / Biographical History

The Gardiner Chair of Music was founded in 1928  , endowed by the gift of the Glasgow shipowners William Guthrie Gardiner and Sir Frederick Crombie Gardiner . Since 1890  a school of Music had existed in the Glasgow Athenaeum . In 1929  this became the Scottish National Academy of Music . A joint Board of Glasgow University and the School of Music proposed that the Chair and the Principal of the School should be held by one person. This was first started in 1930  with the appointment of William Gillies Whittaker , who held the joint post until 1941  . A full list of the University's professors from 1451  to 2001  can be found at http://www.archives.gla.ac.uk/about/publish/elecpubs.html . The Chair and the Principalship of the Scottish National Academy of Music remained joint appointments until 1952  , however the University's association with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama , as it is now known, did not cease until 1994  when the Privy Council granted the Academy powers to award its own degrees.
