Administrative / Biographical History
The Johnstone Smith Chair of Accountancy was founded within the Law Faculty in 1925 , its first professor being John Loudon ( 1926-1938 ). It offered courses for those wishing to enter the accountancy profession, generally via the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland . Among the notable holders of the post were Ian Wilson MacDonald ( 1938-1950 ) and Robert Browning ( 1950-1964 ).
In 1968 the Bachelor of Accountancy Degree (BAcc) was introduced together with a Master of Accountancy (MAcc) by thesis in the same year. Research became a greater part of the Department in 1979 when the PhD programme was established. The part-time Master of International Accounting and Financial Management (MAcc) was introduced in 1980 , with the full-time programme commencing in 1985 .
Two Chairs were founded, in 1973 with the appointment of David Flint and in 1975 with the appointment of Dennis Henry Patz . In 1984 the Faculty was renamed Law and Financial Studies incorporating the two Schools of Law and Accountancy (subsequently renamed the Department of Accounting and Finance in 1987 ). The Department is also closely involved with the Glasgow Business School which was formed in 1986 and offers the Degree of International Master of Business Administration (IMBA). The Arthur Young Chair of Accountancy (later renamed the Ernest and Young Chair) was founded in 1986 , and two additional Chairs were established in 1995 . Two Chairs of Accounting were founded, in 1998 with the appointment of Carol A Adams, and in 2000 with the appointment of Robert Hugh Grey.
