The Department of Drama was founded in 1966  , with an academic staff of three and a student population of forty. Glasgow University was one of the early universities to recognize that the study of theatre was a distinct discipline requiring a particular blend of theoretical historical and practical approaches. In 1972  a Chair of Drama was founded, with James Fullarton Arnott appointed as the first holder of the post. In 1978  Glasgow was among the first universities to promote the study of film and television, and by 1983  the Department was offering two separate undergraduate courses in Theatre Studies and in Film and Television Studies. In 1996  the Chair of Drama was renamed the James Arnott Chair of Drama in memory of the first incumbent. By 2002  the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies had an academic, technical and research staff of fifteen, and a student population of over 600.
