Lovell kept diaries for his visits to the Soviet Union between 1958 and 1976 (he does not appear to have kept diaries for other overseas visits). The 1963 visit proved particularly significant, as Lovell claimed he had been sounded on remaining in the USSR, and on his return to the UK became "mysteriously ill".
