Administrative / Biographical History
It is probable that this letter was studied by James MacMorland for his book on the history of St John's Church, see UGC 224/8/4. The letter refers to a St John's Church, likely to mean St John's Parish Church, where James MacMorland was Minister before retirement. When Reverend Thomas Chalmers left the church in 1823, having been appointed to the Chair of moral philosophy at St Andrews University, he was replaced by Reverend Patrick Macfarlan.
