Administrative / Biographical History

James MacMorland (1886-1975) graduated from the University MA 1906, and BD 1909. He was born in Ayrshire and was educated at Straiton Village School before entering the University in 1903. During his studies he was a very successful student and won various prizes including the Recitation Prize, Vacation Essay Prize, and in 1908 the Cleland and Rae-Wilson Gold Medal for Bible Languages (Hebrew).

MacMorland was a missionary at Arduli in 1908 and at Kinloch Lagan from 1909-1910. He was licenced by the Presbytery of Ayr and became Assistant Minister at Larbert and Dunipace Parish Church from 1911-1913. Reverend MacMorland was Ordained and inducted to St. Margaret’s, Tollcross by the Presbytery of Glasgow in August 1913, moved to Kirkmaiden Parish Church in April 1915 and then joined the R.A.M.C, Aldershot in June 1916. He was sent home from Salonika in August 1917 as he suffered from malaria though on recovery was appointed Chaplain to the Forces with the 51st (Highland) Division in France and served there from 1917-1919.

Reverend MacMorland returned from WWI in March 1919 and was translated to Tarbat Parish Church in October 1920. In 1927 he was translated again, to Cowdenbeath, and once more in 1930 to St John’s, Glasgow from where he retired in 1963 after 50 years of service as an ordained minister. MacMorland had become the Moderator of Glasgow Presbytery in 1938 and Synod of Clydesdale 1958. During WWII he was an Officiating Chaplain for the R.A.F from 1940-1943, and Chaplain to the Balloon Barrage crews and ATS, Glasgow 1941-1945.

Revered James MacMorland died on 16th April 1975.
