Gillespie, Kidd & Coia were awarded the contract to construct The Lawns in 1961. Initially the project was to provide housing for 1000 students in a park-like setting several miles from the university campus. The Lawns represented a move towards greater informality and independence in university accommodation, with a self-service restaurant in the centre building and a much larger scale of operation. The most obvious and significant characteristic of The Lawns is its division of the overall population into smaller groups occupying separate buildings, the whole organised about a central lawn and each building containing a smaller courtyard. The scheme presented in 1961 consisted of 8 blocks of 135 students but the project was soon expanded to 12 blocks, giving a total population of over 1600.

The scheme for The Lawns was halted, incomplete, in 1968, after 6 of the 12 proposed blocks had been built and when the reduced centre building was due to open.

The material has been arranged using original Gillespie Kidd and Coia project reference codes. Some of the material in the collection relates to the design & construction of the Centre Building at the University of Hull. Where a separate reference code was given to these files, images, drawings/plans it has been used.
