The Principal Regent, Andrew Melville , introduced the teaching of Greek to Glasgow University in 1574  . He also introduced the system whereby Regents taught the same subjects throughout the session. This put the teaching of Greek and Latin Literature in the hands of one teacher. The Nova Erectio confirmed this method of teaching in 1577  . Melville's successor's included Patrick Sharp , Robert Boyd , and John Cameron , who as well as teaching also held the post of Principal. From 1581  onwards one of the Regents was sometimes given the title Professor of Greek. By 1637  Greek and Humanity were separated and taught as independent subjects.

In 1695  the Commission of Visitation recommended a separate Professorship, which was instituted in 1704  . The first occupant of the Chair of Greek was Alexander Dunlop , who held the post from 1704  until 1746  . Some of the notable professors included James Moore ( 1746-1774  ), John Young ( 1774-1821  ), George Murray ( 1889-1899  ), and William Rennie ( 1934-1946  ). In 1988  the Departments of Greek and Humanity were merged to from the Department of Classics.
