Administrative / Biographical History

The School of Social Study and Training was founded in 1912  , under the auspices of Glasgow University and a joint committee composed of representatives from Queen Margaret Settlement Association , the Glasgow Union of Women Workers , and the Glasgow Charity Organisation . The purpose in founding the school was to meet the need for theoretical study for social workers to help them to understand the social conditions in which they were working. The first Director of Studies of the School was John Harry Jones ( 1912-1920  ). A diploma of Social Study, retitled Certificate in Social Study in 1948  , was awarded to students who attended the School for two years and who passed the examinations.

In 1943  the School of Social Study and Training became a Department of the University. From 1943-1960  the Department was under the control of the Senate and University Court assisted by an Advisory Committee. The first Director of the School under the new arrangement was James Cunnison ( 1944-1946  ). In 1960  the Committee was replaced by an academic Board of Studies within the Faculty of Arts, and in 1961  the school was renamed the School of Social Study.

In 1971  the school was incorporated into the newly created Department of Social Administration, and the Chair of Social Administration was founded. The first Professor was Frederick Morris Martin ( 1972-1987  ). A full list of the University's professors from 1451  to 2001  can be found at http://www.archives.gla.ac.uk/about/publish/elecpubs.html  .

In 1990  the Department of Social Administration became the Department of Social Policy and Social Work within the Faculty of Social Sciences.
