The study of Economic and Social History at Glasgow University developed within the Political Economy Department. In 1907 Thomas Jones became the first Lecturer in Social Economics, and in 1911  a Lectureship in Economic History was established. By 1952  there were two lecturers in both Social History and Economic History within the Department of Political Economy.

In 1955  the Chair of Economic History was founded with the appointment of Sydney George Checkland , who held the post until 1982  . The Department of Economic History was established in 1957  within the Faculty of Arts, but in 1977  it became part of the newly created Faculty of Social Sciences. It changed its name in 1992  to the Department of Economic and Social History. The Department of Economic and Social History is also part of The School of History and Archaeology, which was established in 1992  . Areas of research in 2002  focus on business and financial history, social policy and medical history, trade, transport and investment.
