Administrative / Biographical History
The Chair of Anatomy and Botany, founded in 1718 , was the eleventh Chair founded in Glasgow University . Before 1714 , it is probable that the Visitor of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons would have taught any anatomical classes that were available. In 1714 , a Glasgow surgeon, John Gordon , was appointed to teach anatomy at the University. In 1818 , Anatomy and Botany were separated, with the founding of a Chair of Botany. The Chair of Anatomy initially was part of the Medical Faculty but was moved in 1893 to the newly created Faculty of Science.
The first Professor of Anatomy, Thomas Brisbane , was appointed in 1720 and held the post until 1742 . Other notable Professors of Anatomy during this period were Robert Hamilton ( 1742-1756 ), Joseph Black ( 1756-1757 ), and Thomas Hamilton ( 1757-1781 ). Anatomy was not at this point considered a full-time occupation for its professors, who not only taught other subjects but also practised medicine. However, the Department was built up and extended in the nineteenth century by James Jeffray ( 1790-1848 ), and John Cleland ( 1877-1909 ). In 1994 , the Anatomy department was merged along with ten other former departments, Botany, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics and Biotechnology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physical Education and Sports Science, Physiology, Virology, and Zoology, to form the Institute of Biomedical and Life Sciences. This in turn became the Faculty of Biomedical and Life Sciences in 2000 . Anatomy is part of the Neuroscience and Biomedical Systems division of the Faculty.
