The bulk of material in this series is the correspondence between MBH and Josef Berger when they were parted during the following situations: 1) in 1936 when she left him in Palestine to come to the UK; 2) when she was evacuated to Bridport in Dorset in 1939; 3) when he was interned on the Isle of Man in July 1940; and 4) when they went on separate holidays mainly in Europe in the post-war years. However, there is also some correspondence with other members of the Berger family (in MBH 2/2) and also with friends and officials concerning the release of JB from internment (in MBH 2/6). There are also copies of letters from MBH to her childhood art teacher, Franz Cižek.
