Administrative / Biographical History

Michael Anne took the surname of Tasburgh on his marriage with Mary Augusta Rosalia, the daughter and heir of George Tasburgh of Bodney, Norfolk in 1810. The estates in Yorkshire and Norfolk were settled in 1813 (see principally DD/ANNE/9, DD/ANNE/17 and DD/ANNE/18 below). The Norfolk estate was sold in 1855 (see DD/ANNE/6/4 below).</p><p>Their son, George, resumed the surname of Anne, transferring the estate to his son in return for an annuity in 1852, a year before his death (see DD/ANNE/33 below). On the death of George in 1882, the Burghwallis estate was inherited by his nephew, Ernest Lambert Swinburn Charlton. He was the second son of Barbara Charlton, the sister of George, who had married W H Charlton of Hesleyside, Northumberland. In 1883, he changed his surname to Anne by royal licence. E L S Anne died in 1941, the estate was inherited by Major G C Anne, and was sold in the following year. The estate was sold privately, but had first been offered at auction and a copy of the sale catalogue can be found amongst the records of Dawsons of Doncaster, estate agents, at Doncaster reference DY/DAW/9 14
