Administrative / Biographical History

Thana, the chief town in the Thana district of Bombay, was under Portuguese rule from 1533 to 1739. When in 1771 the Portuguese appeared to be making efforts to regain their possessions, the British administration in Bombay tried to negotiate to acquire Thana. When negotiations failed, the British took the town by force.
