Administrative / Biographical History
In 1612, ships of the sixth voyage called at Dabdol in the kingdom of Bijapur on the east coast of India. Negotiations for a settlement at Rajapur a few miles away began in 1628 but it was not until nine years later that a factory was established there. Calicoes, cotton yarn, saltpetre and pepper were the main items purchased. The Courteen Association established its own factory at Rajapur but the Company's presence was consolidated when the Association and the Company united in 1650. From around 1660 the town was periodically raided by the rebel Maratha leader Sivaji and the factory was abandoned in 1679.
