Opera in three acts. An autograph short score ('sketches') in one volume, and a partly autograph full score in three volumes (1960), with later additions and annotations.

Text adapted by Britten and Peter Pears from the play of the same name by William Shakespeare.

First performance: Aldeburgh Festival, 11 June 1960, Jubilee Hall, Aldeburgh. First broadcast: 24 June 1960 (BBC Home Service), recorded 10 June at the dress rehearsal for the première.
