Scope and Content

AGB to FB replying to FB's enquiry about doubling of track, which he had forgotten to answer. Confirms that there is to be a considerable stretch of doubling carried out, and a narrow portion of road is to be tracked with interlacing lines. One new cross-over will be inserted. Mr A S Valentine of their engineers in London, will have the details. Returns to the subject of rails placed on road surfaces and muses that there was a genuine cause of complaint then, as traffic was obstructed from crossing and carts, presumably, had to be prised over. Believes that history has repeated itself in this way: early tramway rights were given to companies by Commisioners in the same way that licences are granted to buses nowadays, heedless of commitments or responsibilities. The result of this was the introduction of the stiff Tramways Act of 1870. Similarly, "the rascally and loose methods since the inaugration of buses up to a year ago" has led to what will be a drastic Traffic Bill to control them. Refers to Andrew Nance and queries whether he is still alive and in Belfast. He also was a son of Portsmouth.
