Scope and Content

Replaced the Library, Museums and Archives Committee (see CC2/9) and the Recreation Subcommittee of the Environmental Committee (see CC2/7/A15).

Responsibilities include: libraries, museums, archaeology, archives and modern records services; support for sport, recreation, entertainment and arts facilities; recreation in the countryside including access to open country, tourism, recreational caravan sites, camping and picnic sites; commons; tree and plant protection; conservation; all rights of way as defined under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981; the Victoria County History.

In September 1998, in response to a report, A New Approach to Investing in Culture, produced by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), whereby the term culture was to be promoted in its widest sense, the Department of Leisure and Arts (DLA) and MALL were re-named Cultural Services (CS)
